FOOD DRIVES
Many organizations, churches, schools,
businesses, and more choose to help the food
bank each year through organizing food
drives among their members. Oftentimes this
coincides with the holidays, but many times
it does not. After all, people are hungry
365 days a year, not just over the holidays.

The mission of the United
Way Community Food Bank is to serve people
in need by securing and storing surplus food
and household items and distributing it
through local partnering service agencies. |
|
|

|
|
WHAT DO I DO IF I AM IN
NEED OF FOOD ASSISTANCE? |
|
The food bank itself does not do direct
public assistance, but rather provides food
and household items to various nonprofit
agencies in the community, including church
food pantries, local soup kitchens,
shelters, and other applicable programs. If
you are in need of food assistance, or are
looking for a food pantry in your area,
please call the United Way Referral Line at
211, have your zip code ready, and tell them
you are looking for a food pantry in your
area. |
|
|
WHAT AREAS DO YOU SERVE? |
|
The food bank’s service area is a thirteen
county area in central Alabama. Our service
area includes the following counties:
Winston; Walker; Blount; Jefferson; Shelby;
Talladega; Clay; St. Clair; Etowah; Calhoun;
Cherokee; Cleburne; and Randolph Counties. |
|
HOW CAN MY ORGANIZATION OR CHURCH BECOME
A MEMBER AGENCY WITH
THE FOOD BANK? |
|
You can find out more information on our “Becoming
a Member Agency” page. |
|
|
WHERE CAN I BRING FOOD DONATIONS? |
|
We welcome food donations, and you can bring
them to the food bank during our regular
office hours. |
|
|
IS IT MORE HELPFUL TO DONATE FOOD OR
MONEY? |
|
That is completely up to you. The food bank
welcomes all food donations, and with
monetary donations, we in turn purchase
supplemental food for our distribution, so
either way, your donations will go to feed
those in need. |
|
|
WHERE DO YOU GET THE FOOD? |
|
We get food from a variety of sources,
including foods collected during individual
and company food drives, foods donated from
wholesale distributors, and food we
ourselves purchase to supplement our supply.
In addition, we are a USDA TEFAP Commodities
Distributor, which stands for The Emergency
Feeding Assistance Program. You can read
more
about TEFAP here. All donated
product the food bank receives is thoroughly
inspected for quality and goodness before it
is distributed to the public.
