A grant of $100,000 from the Greater Birmingham Foundation made it possible for the Food Bank to open its doors on December 1, 1982. At that time, service was provided to Jefferson, Shelby and Walker counties. The planning was done by volunteers from the community and the Planning department of United Way of Central Alabama. Over the last 33 years, the number of counties served by the food bank has increased from 3 to 12 and the number of agencies distributing food in Central Alabama has increased from 30 to 240.

In 2015, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama distributed 10,000,000 nutritious meals.

Every dollar donated to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama provides the equivalent of eight meals for an individual.

We calculate this by dividing total meals provided by total adjusted costs, using a Feeding America formula.  The number does not include the meals provided through SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) benefits.

As a member of the nation's largest non-governmental, domestic hunger relief organization - Feeding America - our goal is to make food accessible to hungry people in their greatest times of need.
